Ranjiv Singh lovingly known as ‘Baby’ is the youngest child of chacha Jai Lal and youngest cousin. He was born on 2nd October, 1952 at Samrala, Ludhiana. He was a very lovely child and everyone in the family had great affection for him. My father used to call him a ‘glaxo-baby’ and was very fond of his company. As he grew older, he developed the rare qualities of being bold, courageous and industrious. He topped in every class right from the beginning. He passed his B.A with English (Hons) from DAV College, Chandigarh standing First in the University. At the same time, he excelled in the field of oration and became the best extempore speaker in Chandigarh. After graduation in the year 1971, he joined Delhi University for LLB Degree. Before he passed it in 1974, he sat for the IPS Examination, which he qualified with distinction and stood first in India. Being a topper he was allotted his home state. After training, he was initially posted as ASP Ambala, later on as SP Jind, then as SSP Bhiwani and later on various positions in the State Police. He finally headed the Force as DGP Haryana Police. After retirement, he was posted as Director General, HIPA Gurugram and now working with rural communities to empower them.
Bhai Ranjiv was very honest, intelligent and hardworking police officer. His integrity and devotion to duty are widely known to everyone. His act of great valour came to be known when he risked his own life and shot dead a notorious dacoit named ‘Sunda’ at Charkhi Dadri when he was SSP Bhiwani. He killed the dacoit after having been wounded by a shot of the dacoit. R.S. Dalal was awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry and a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- besides lifelong monthly award of Rs. 150/- for the brave act on the Republic Day by the Governor of Haryana. The driver and a Havaldar accompanying him also played their part bravely and both were awarded Police Medals for Gallantry and Rs. 5000/- each and an appreciation letter from the Haryana Government. While in the Medical College Hospital Brigadier Ram Singh, the then Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha appreciated his bravery and said that he killed the dacoit after getting a shot of bullet in his stomach was really a great act of bravery comparable to acts of bravery in Military History. Ch. Devi Lal, the then CM, Haryana also gave such appreciation and besides recommending for a President’s Medal for bravery, cash award of Rs. 10,000 was also awarded. Everyone in the family and even some outsiders felt much rejoiced as the operation had been very successful.
Ranjiv was discharged from the hospital after about three weeks since he was quite weak with wounds just healed, requiring some more time for proper and complete healing. He was taken by his sister Kamla Chaudhary with her to Karnal where all sorts of facilities and care were available.
Bhai Ranjiv is a very popular and efficient police officer with a high reputation. His method of administration is unique. He was very tough for all law breakers especially, drunkards, eve-teasers and other evil-minded people. He was quite considerate to the poor people. He listened to their complaints with lot of patience and tried his best to help. His efficiency and sense of duty was well known in all circles and including higher authorities. He is really a pride of our family. My father was much influenced with his integrity, high sense of duty and administrative ability and capacity to control the Police Department. After retirement bhai Ranjiv has settled in Gurugram. Before retirement, he had taken up an unfinished task of his father.
Chacha Jai Lal on various occasions and particularly when he used to visit the house of the Presenter while attending meetings at Delhi used to discuss about opening a Library in the Haveli of Dada Roop Chand, which remained his dream. His unfinished desire was fulfilled by bhai Ranjiv, who took up this task and arranged foreign/inland funding from different sources to create “Dada Roop Chand Read India Gyan Kendra”, where training on various house-hold activities is organized for women-empowerment.
Although, the villagers themselves pay an important role in transforming their village to a ‘Model Village’, yet being the retired senior-most cop of the state, he has also made efforts through different departments to make available the required infrastructures for the benefit of villagers. He has also helped many individuals within the Parivaar as well as other youngsters of the village to get employment in Police Force or elsewhere in private sector, which is a noble contribution.
Ranjiv is married to Sunita and the couple has been blessed with two sweet daughters Vasundhara married to an IPS officer from Haryana cadre and Priyanka married to a police officer from Delhi cadre.
